John, I can relate! After becoming a cyclist, I've often been angry about my genetic disposition, and have also been surprised at how few pure sprinters there are in the sport. Glad to read someone who crystallizes exactly what it's like to be a fast twitcher. (I'd like to hear more about what you mentioned regarding the quality and quantity of workouts for sprinters vs. endurance guys and overtraining for the former because I've never heard this.)

Last, I too love Krabbe's "The Rider." I've read it twice and look forward to future reads. My other favorite cycling book is Paul Fournel's "Need for the Bike." It's really a gem and it's a shame it isn't read more. And don't be fooled by it's awful, misleading cover. Check it out!

Dude,

In the realm of racing, I've never heard truer words that describe me. I too am a sprinter, 8 seconds is about right. I was recently suckered into an indoor TTT with two total TT guys who were desperate for a 3rd person. I paid $20, rode in the car for 4hrs round trip, suffered 24:55 in front of others no less and caused my team to lose 50sec over their previous time.

When asked if I would do it again in two weeks, I told them I would rather pay $20 to get kicked in the balls and just stay home.

I claimed fast twitch as an excuse for not being a "roadie." John tells me I am a "No Twitch" Nonetheless. love the writing. John, you should share your reading list with Blog Readers as the books you've turned me onto are life shaping- more than the movies listed to be sure. ;) (Follow that with your top ten favorite red wines from Italy, Spain and then France.)

John, keep writing as much as you can. You have a great talent in telling a story with a solid point to make.

I am also stuck with some fast-twitch as a decent leaper in volleyball, a faster-than-you soccer player.. At least now I see from your story that I can have a place (and a category--sprinter) in cycling.. and not feel bad about it :)
